Right now in Florida, public school students are being given intrusive surveys—often without their parents' knowledge or consent. These surveys, some of which are highlighted in Abigail Shrier’s book Bad Therapy, can delve into highly personal topics and are being conducted under an opt-out model that leaves many parents in the dark.
We believe it’s time to put parents back in control.
By switching to an opt-in model, schools would be required to obtain prior parental consent before administering any non-academic survey to students—just like they already do for field trips, medical care, and after-school activities. This simple but powerful change ensures transparency and respects family values.
The Lee County School District has already adopted an opt-in strategy for some of its operations—and it’s working.
Florida has led the way in expanding parental rights through legislation like the Parental Bill of Rights and the Parental Rights in Education Act. Moving to an opt-in model for school surveys is the next logical step in that progress.
Sign this petition to call on Florida lawmakers to support HB 1505 and school districts to put parents first and make student surveys opt-in, not opt-out.
Let’s continue to lead the nation in empowering families and protecting children.
