Dear [Recipient's Name],
Currently, in Florida, public school students are being given intrusive surveys without parental knowledge. Abigail Shrier’s newest book, Bad Therapy, describes some of these surveys in Florida. To empower parents to have a greater say over their child’s education, we need to change the opt-out model to an opt-in one. By doing this, a parent would first have to provide permission to the school before the survey is administered. This is similar to how it currently works for children to participate in after-school activities, field trips, etc. The Lee County School District has implemented an opt-in strategy for some of its operations, and it has worked well. In Florida, we have a multi-year history of supporting parental rights and expanding them. The parental bill of rights and the subsequent parental bill of rights in education have set the standard for this noble fight. Putting parents in the driver’s seat on whether surveys can be administered to their children is another step in that process. For this reason, I encourage you to support HB 1505.
