Dear [Recipient's Name],
Currently, in Florida, parents do not have any ability to restrict their child's access to A.I. within a school setting or at home. AI has the potential to collect data well beyond what school districts can and do collect right now. This data collection by third-party vendors is not currently protected like other data the schools collect. In addition, A.I. has the potential to teach a worldview that doesn’t coincide with the views of the parent due to the open nature of A.I. An online survey conducted by Learner.com found that: 70.9% are worried about AI creating over-reliance on technology. An August 2024 survey conducted by the Cybersecurity company Norton: 93% of parents are concerned about AI being used in the classroom or at school 51% of parents worry about their children coming across inappropriate content through AI According to Common Sense Media: 1/3 of children are choosing an AI companion over a human for serious conversations. According to the APA: Adolescents are less likely than adults to question the accuracy and intent of information offered by a bot as compared with a human. Florida has a legal track record of protecting and promoting parental rights regarding what children are exposed to in and outside of schools. Responsible Guardrails need to be put in place to protect children from harm to their mental health and to continue promoting parental rights. These include strengthening data privacy for students, requiring parental opt-in for AI use by their child in schools, requiring age verification/bans on harmful chatboat access, and requiring A.I. to have a Western civilizational worldview that does not contradict our state standards. There is a coalition of 17+ organizations that support these above mentioned solutions. These organizations include: Moms for America, Stand for Health Freedom, Citizens Defending Freedom, Ethics and Public Policy Center, Christian Family Coalition, and America’s Future among others.
