On June 13, The Collier County School Board will be actively considering the creation of the Guardian Program in Collier County schools. The Guardian Program, signed into law by Governor Scott, would allow highly trained administrators or staff in a public school to conceal carry a firearm and use it only when an active shooter situation is occurring. The administrator or staff member would have to undergo 144 hours of training with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The applicant to the Guardian Program would also need to pass a mental examination. Implementation of this law was left to the discretion of each School Board.

Florida Citizens Alliance and many others locally support this program due to the increased need to protect our students at school. One School Resource Officer and/or a roaming guardian will not adequately protect students. Only multiple individuals at the start of an active shooter situation can do this. The Lee County School Board also recently voted 7-0 to start implementing the Guardian Program fully.
