This legislation is about reproductive health and disease education in public schools. House PCB 545 features an opt in vs the senate's CS/SB 410 opt out, as proposed by Senator Brandes. The difference could not be more stark! Inevitably the curriculum will reflect someone’s values. An opt-in puts the parents’ values front & center, and requires the school to persuade the parent that the curriculum will benefit their child. An opt-out puts the power & choice of values in the hands of the school/government. Why would anyone be so eager to put parents on defense rather than require the school/government to convince the parents? The burden should be on the school/government not on the parents.
